Steps to Test Your Car Battery Using a Multimeter

GET READY:
  • First, put on some gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself.
  • Find a safe, open spot to park your car. Start the engine and turn on your headlights.
SET THE MULTIMETER:
  • Grab your Multimeter and set it to the DC setting, aiming for around 20V. This is perfect for a standard 12V battery.
MEASURE THE VOLTAGE (ENGINE ON):
  • Take the red probe and place it on the battery’s positive terminal.
  • Then, put the black probe on a metal part of the car to ground it.
  • If you see a reading above 13.5V, that’s a great sign! It means your alternator is doing its job well.
CHECK THE BATTERY (ENGINE OFF):
  • Now, turn off the engine and do the test again.
  • A reading of 12.7V or higher means your battery is fully charged and happy! If it’s 12.5V or below, it might be time to think about recharging or replacing it.

Testing Without a Multimeter

  • Give your battery a good look! Check for any signs of corrosion, leaks, or bulges.
